Franck Riester (born on January 3, 1974) is an French politician, who is minister of Culture within the administration of Premier Edouard Philippe from 2018. He was an elected part of the National Assembly of France from 2007 until 2018, and was a member of from the Seine-et-Marne department.
Riester was appointed Minister of Culture under the administration that was led by Prime Secretary Edouard Philippe on the 16th of October 2018. While in office In September, he announced 2019 a reform to public broadcasting project that aims to create “France Medias”, bringing together France Televisions, Radio France, France Medias Monde (Radio France Internationale as well as France 24) and the National Audiovisual Institute (INA). He also joined with the Superior Council of the Audiovisual (CSA) with the Supreme Authority for the Distribution and Protection of Intellectual Property on the Internet (HADOPI).
In March 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic Riester tested positive for COVID-19.
When director Roman Polanski won best directing for his film An Officer and a Spy at the annual César Awards in 2020, his cast and production team boycotted the ceremony after Riester said the success of a director accused of sexual violence would send the wrong signal in the era of the Me Too movement.
In the month of January, 2013, Riester was one of the two UMP deputies, as was Benoist Apparu. They both publicly proclaim his support for and vote for legislation that would legalize same-sex weddings in France that had been drafted in the cabinet of Premier Jean-Marc Ayrault.
