Francine Muyumba Biography

Francine Muyumba is one of the most popular and richest Activist who was born on February 18, 1987 in Bujumbura, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her work has included peace activist both locally and internationally. In her position, Francine Muyumba advocates for youth entrepreneurship and jobs creation in order to promote peace and stability across the African continent. She also has advocated for African young people in the presence of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. She was only the second Pan African Youth Union president since the founding this organization back in the year 1962. She is the first to have the opportunity to address the UN General Assembly on behalf of African Youth. She is working closely with the UN Envoy for Youth to highlight issues that affect young people around the globe.

Muyumba was elected as president of the Panafrican Youth Union (PYU) in 2014. The PYU is an elected body representing the entire population of African young people (defined as being under 35 years old age)–a segment that makes up 65 percent of the African population. In her time in the position of president for PYU Muyumba forged a stronger connection between the African Union Commission, in the hope of bringing African youth into the forefront of decision-making; and helped facilitate intergenerational communication as well as the participation of young voice in politics across Africa. Muyumba is the main youth representative for the African Union and associated heads of states. Muyumba collaborated with African Union chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini- Zuma to create a fund for youth development in the continent.

Muyumba lives in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. In July 2019, she married long time partner and spokesperson of Congo’s former ruling party, Patrick Nkanga, in a traditional wedding in Kinshasa.

In March 2019, Muyumba was elected to the Congolese Senate by the provincial assembly of Haut-Katanga. At the age of 32, she was one of the two youngest persons elected to the body.

In Namibia Muyumba was the country coordinator for Namibia. the United Nations Association. After her studies and her time as the country coordinator in 2012, she returned to assist young people in her homeland DRC between 2012 and 2014. Based on her experiences of youth activism across the globe She is a frequent public speaker on issues affecting youth as well as before the United Nations. She also served as President of the Administrative Board of the National Federation of Youth Entrepreneurs of the DRC and as the country coordinator of the National Youth Forum DRC, and bilingual secretary for the DRC peace talks between the government and M23 rebels from Kampala, Uganda. She has helped mobilize the youth in across the Great Lakes region of Africa to take part in peace and stability forums and also became an advocate for the rights of youth. She was one of the women to be the president of the Panafrican Youth Union, representing all African youth in the umbrella of the African Union.
