Dame Frances Mary Ashcroft, DBE FRS FMedSci (born 1952) is a British Ion channel physiologist. Ashcroft has been appointed Royal Society GlaxoSmithKline Research Professor at the University Laboratory of Physiology at the University of Oxford. It is one of the fellows at Trinity College, Oxford and is the director for the Oxford Centre for Gene Function. Her research group has earned an international reputation for their work in insulin secretion as well as type II diabetes as well as neonatal diabetics. Her collaboration in collaboration with Andrew Hattersley has helped enable children with diabetes to change off insulin injections for tablets.
Ashcroft was a guest (as as a diner) in MasterChef during the 2011 season alongside a number of fellow Fellows from the Royal Society.
In the 2015 Birthday Honours, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) ‘for services to Medical Science and the Public Understanding of Science’. She was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 1999.
Ashcroft received honorary degree from Doctor from the university by the Open University in 2003 and Doctor of Science from the University of Leicester on 13 July 2007.
