He was the winner of the world junior mile championship in 1992, and an international senior title in 1993 as well as 1994.

He was the winner of the kilometre in Atlanta but he resigned from the sport to become an athlete. He was coached with Gerard Quintyn and won the world sprint championship from 1996 until 1998. He took home three Olympic gold medals as well as the silver. He was the world athlete sprint champ in 1997 and 1998 . He also was the winner of an additional 17 national titles in the sprint.
