She was raised within Dunedin in the Ida Valley as the second youngest of seven siblings. Her first race was at the World Rowing Junior Championships in 2000 in Zagreb, Croatia, where she placed eighth with 8 junior females. In the World Rowing Junior Championships 2001 in Duisburg, Germany, she placed sixth with female juniors in the eight. In 2003, at the World Rowing U23 Regatta in Belgrade, Serbia, she was fourth in the women’s U23 four along together with fellow team members Bess Halley Darnelle Timbs, and Andrea Rixtrott. She was crowned world champ during the U23 World Rowing Championship in Poznan, Poland, in 2004 when she won the U23 women’s quadruple sculls , along with other members Bess Halley Darnelle Timbs, and Jaime Nielsen.

She took part in double sculls together with Reymer during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and they finished in the fifth position. Paterson quit following her participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics and relocated to Christchurch and worked as an instructor of rowing and a Physical Education teacher for Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and was completing a postgraduate teacher’s diploma at Christchurch’s New Zealand Graduate School of Education. The year 2015 saw Paterson returned to the sport and was picked from Rowing New Zealand to be part of the 57-strong squad of which the nine teams for the boat will be selected. In the New Zealand national championships at Lake Karapiro on 16 February 2016 Paterson took on Rebecca Scown in the women’s coxless team, but they were defeated by Emma Dyke and Grace Prendergast in second place. The Olympic rowing squad was revealed on March 4, 2016 Scown as well as Genevieve Behrent were chosen instead of Paterson and they won bronze in their respective events.

At the World Rowing Cup regattas in 2010 she participated in the women’s quadruple sculls along with Emma Feathery, Paula Twining and Louise Trappitt and came in sixth place on the podium in Munich, Germany, and in Lucerne, Switzerland. In the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand, she took part with the female double sculls alongside Feathery, and was ranked seventh. In 2011, at the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, she teamed along with Anna Reymer in the women’s double sculls to win bronze.
