Fernando Manuel Silva Couto, OIH (Portuguese”fir’nadu ‘ko(w)tu on August 2, 1969) is a Portuguese former footballer who was a central defender.

Always the first option, Couto represented the nation at UEFA Euro 1996- scoring the only goal of the game for the final quarter-finals during a group phase match against Turkeyin Euro 2000 and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, partnering his former Porto player Jorge Costa in the last two tournaments, both of which ended with a the group stage of elimination.

After two seasons at the Camp Nou, Couto left Barça and joined Rome’s S.S. Lazio in late June 1998 as teammate Iván de la Peña. He appeared in 22 matches in his first year to help his team to the second place in the league, and featured one minute in the final of the last Cup Winners’ Cup, in a 2–1 win against RCD Mallorca at the Villa Park in Birmingham.

In 2001, Couto failed a doping test for the steroid nandrolone. He denied having taken forbidden substances, but his “B” test confirmed the finding and he eventually served four months out of a nine-month worldwide ban for the offence. He continued to appear regularly for Lazio in the following seasons.

Couto came back to Porto in the year 1990, and was an integral defensive team member that won six titles in the span of four years. Couto later relocated in Italy as a player with Parma AC, scoring a career-high four goals in 27 games during his debut season. He also won the UEFA Cup, in a 1-1 aggregate win over the rival Serie A side Juventus F.C..

Born in Espinho close to Porto, Couto joined FC Porto’s youth team in the year 17. On June 2, 1988, the player made his first team – as well as Primeira Liga – debut, playing 90 minutes in a 1-0 home win over Academica de Coimbra in what was to be his final appearance for the champions of national football. Then he was released, and spent one year in a row with F.C. Famalicao and Academica.
