On the 4th of June, 1995 Ryan made his debut as a senior with Cork during a 2-13 win over 3-9 Munster semi-final loss to Clare.

After losing the senior decider in 1998, Blackrock were back in the final once again the following year. A 3–17 to 0–8 trouncing of University College Cork gave Ryan his first championship medal.

After facing defeat by Connacht in his debut season in 1999, Ryan was appointed captain of the side the following year. A 3–15 to 2–15 defeat of Leinster gave him a Railway Cup medal.

Three years later, in 1993, Ryan was finishing his season as a player for Cork’s Cork Under-21 squad. He was substitute for the provincial final and was awarded the Munster medal after a 1-18-3-9 loss to Limerick.

Ryan first gained attention in the inter-county league as a player of the Cork minor Hurling team in 1990. Ryan made his debut in that class in a match against Clare at the province final. A win of 1-9 to 0-9 earned Ryan the Munster medal. The following All-Ireland game was a deciding one between Cork with Kilkenny. In the lead by 10 points at the break, Cork made a comeback to draw the match 3-14 to 1. The replay took place four weeks later and was a struggle for Ryan’s team by injury as Brian Corcoran had to withdraw because of injury. Cork were defeated in that match and went down 3-16 to 1-11.

In Blackrock, Cork, Ryan first began to play competitive hurling when he was at at Colaiste Chriost Ri. Ryan made his debut on the scene of inter-county hurling at the age of 17 when he began to join to his Cork minor hurling team after which he joined the under-21 team. Ryan made his debut as a senior player during his time in the 1992-1993 National Hurling League. Ryan was able to collect one All-Ireland medal as well as two Munster medals, and one National Hurling League medal.

Cork qualified for the National League decider in 1998, and a 2–14 to 0–13 win over Waterford gave Ryan a National Hurling League medal.
