Following another loan, but now returning to Roda’s Netherlands along with Roda, Sonkaya was released in June 2008 and was signed by Bursaspor. But, halfway through his season, he transferred towards the Azerbaijani club FK Khazar Lankaran.
In 2005-06 Sonkaya joined Portuguese team FC Porto, and collected the Primeira Liga winner’s medal, however, he played very little. In the following season, the player was loaned out by Academica de Coimbra also in the country, and played in only four games in the top division.

His professional career began with Roda JC in 1998 and following six years (three as a first-choice) and an loan to VVV-Venlo between, was transferred onto Besiktas J.K. in his home country.
Sonkaya is a Turkish player since the year 2003. Sonkaya earned six caps and played twice at the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup as the national team finished in third place (two two wins of 2-1).
In February 2010, Sonkaya returned to his country, signing with Kayseri Erciyesspor in the second level.
