Fang Zhouzi is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on September 28, 1967 in Yunxiao, Fujian, China. Fang Zhouzi (real name Fang Shimin) was born in Yunxiao County, Fujian, China in September of 1967. Fang claimed the pen name, “Fang Zhouzi”, originates from a classic Chinese expression that translates to “two ships sailing together” In this instance the two ships are for literature and science. Fang completed his studies at the University of Science and Technology of China in the year 1990. He then was enrolled at Michigan State University, where Fang earned an Ph.D. from biochemistry the year 1995. Fang was then employed at several institutes as a postdoctoral research for molecular gene research.
In an article published in the article in the 2010 New York Times article, Fang explained the issues in Chinese scientific credibility to the fact that the system of universities is that is run by bureaucrats from the state who have no or little knowledge of the areas they oversee which is why they base their decisions on research grants and advancements on the amount of scientific papers that are discovered, and not on their credibility, their location, or when they were published. According to Fang another source of problems is colleagues who shield their colleagues, sometimes because of their personal connections and other times due to the worry about being revealed. In 2010, Fang’s website contained more than 900 instances of academic fraud. These included presidents of universities as well as well-known researchers.
On March 30, 2011, Beijing-based newspaper Legal Weekly published an investigative report on Fang’s alleged plagiarism. It found an article authored by Fang, published in the newspaper Economic Observer and included in two of Fang’s books, plagiarized an online article posted in 2001 by Ying He. On a separate issue, Michigan State University professor Robert Root-Bernstein accused that Fang, in an online post in 1995, plagiarized one of his essays published by Oxford University Press. In response, Fang apologized for not crediting Prof. Root-Bernstein in the post, but denied he committed plagiarism or copyright infringement. Soon after, Fang accused Dr. Root-Bernstein of being a former member of a pseudo-science group.
In November 2012, Fang was joint winner, with Simon Wessely, of the combined Nature and Sense About Science inaugural John Maddox Prize for standing up for science.
Despite his intention to investigate and improve the integrity of research in China Fang’s conduct has been criticised for lack of transparency that could allow for legitimate investigations. A majority of the allegations made public on Fang’s website every year are unsigned and do not provide any specifics, and the people accusers have not been able to take action in the aftermath. On May 8th, in 2006 Fu Xinyuan, an Indiana University professor of immunology issued an open letter that was signed by 120 foreign Chinese scholars, calling for due process and the presumption to be innocent when it comes to Chinese academic corruption instances. The letter also criticized the use of the rhetoric of populists as well as personal insults to influence institutions’ investigations. Even though the letter did not specifically mention Fang Zhouzi or his New Threads website It was widely viewed as a counter to Fang’s campaign. Fang has denied Fu Xinyuan’s assertions, calling Fu’s statement “contrary to the spirit of free speech”. On May 25, 2006. Nature released a review of Fang’s research, saying that Fang’s website opened a discussion about academic integrity and academic misconduct in China as well as other areas where China has acknowledged “serious problems”, the inconspicuous nature of the accusations made on the website of Fang brought back memories of similar innocuous accusations which led to the persecution by “government enemies” during the Cultural Revolution. Fang was quick to respond to the Nature article by saying that it was “absurd to compare Internet freedom of speech to the Cultural Revolution”.

There is no formal body or process to deal with complaints or to investigate accusations of fraud. Fang launched the site as an unofficial platform to reveal instances. The year 2006 saw a string of allegations and counter-accusations made on the website of Fang resulted in massive media attention, as well as criticisms of the self-conducted investigation of Chinese university authorities, and a greater involvement of independent investigative agencies like The Ministry of Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences or the National Natural Science Foundation of China to investigate allegations although these bodies already play an obligation to investigate academic misconduct, but their involvement is viewed as not effective. In 2012, Fang received the first John Maddox Prize, given to him through Nature and Sense About Science to “individuals who have promoted sound science and evidence on a matter of public interest, with an emphasis on those who have faced difficulty or opposition in doing so.” The announcement for Fang’s presentation included a summary of his work and stated:
in 2006 Fang had been found guilty of lying through an Intermediate Court.
In the summer of 2010, after Fang questioned the efficacy of his surgical procedure and the accuracy of his curriculum vitae, urologist Xiao Chuanguo hired thugs to assault Fang in Beijing. Fang escaped with only minor cuts and bruises, but believed it was an attempt to kill him. Xiao had sued Fang for libel five times in the past five years, winning one case, losing two and two further being undecided. The dispute between Fang and Xiao dated to the founding of the New Threads website, when Fang had used the website to question the accuracy of Xiao’s application to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
