Fabio Luisi (born 17 January 1959) is a famous Italian conductor from Italy. He is the general director of music for the Zurich Opera, principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and music director-designate for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Within the United States, Luisi made his Metropolitan Opera conducting debut in March 2005, accompanied by Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo. In April of 2010 the company appointed Luisi as the principal guest conductor, with the initial period for three years that began for the season 2010-11. Luisi is the only conductor who held his position at Metropolitan Opera following Valery Gergiev. The company promoted Luisi to the rank of Principal Conductor in September of 2011 after music director James Levine withdrew from his scheduled autumn 2011 performances. Luisi was removed as the principal conductor at the Metropolitan Opera at the close of the season 2016-2017.

In January 2016, the Opera di Firenze announced the appointment of Luisi as its next music director, the first conductor to hold that title with the company, and in parallel, as director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, as of April 2018, with an initial contract of five years. In July 2019, Luisi resigned as music director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with immediate effect.

Luisi has conducted several opera recordings, including Giuseppe Verdi’s Aroldo, Jérusalem and Alzira, and Gioacchino Rossini’s William Tell. He won a Grammy Award for his leadership of Siegfried and Götterdämmerung on a Deutsche Grammophon DVD release of Richard Wagner’s operatic cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. This was recorded live at the Metropolitan Opera and named Best Opera Recording of 2012.

In January 2004 Luisi was appointed head conductor for both Staatskapelle Dresden and of the Semperoper, Dresden. Luisi assumed both positions in September of 2007. As conductor of his orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, Luisi conducted commercial recordings of music composed by Richard Strauss and Anton Bruckner. Luisi was initially scheduled to leave as the chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden in 2012, after the expiration of his contract. But he resigned both Dresden post in February 2010 immediately, following reports that the management of the Staatskapelle had signed an agreement with ZDF. ZDF network for a planned television show at midnight on the New Year’s Day 2010. The concert will be conducted by Christian Thielemann as conductor, without consulting him in his role acting as orchestra’s GMD.
