Ezechiele Ramin was born Padua (in Padua, in Veneto area of Italy) on the 23rd of March 1953. He was the youngest of six sons from a family of modest means. He was a student at an Liceo Classico at an Catholic institution (Collegio Vescovile, Gregorio and Barbarigo) which was where he learned of the plight of people all over the world. The realization prompted him to join the foundation Mani Tese (“Outstretched Hands”) and organising various camps to collect money for small-scale projects associated with the charity.

On the 24th of July in 1985, Father Ramin, alongside the local trade union president Adilio de Souza, chaired an assembly held in Fazenda Catuva, a town in Ji-Parana located in the adjacent state of Rondonia and tried to persuade the small farmers working there to not take weapons against landowners in contravention of a caution from his superiors. As he returned to the state together with de Souza, at midday the group was attacked with seven pistoleros (hired firearmsmen) who fired on him more than fifty times. In the moments before his death, he uttered”I forgive you” before dying “I forgive you”. Since Father Ramin’s body could not be found from his missionaries around 24 hours after his demise the group of Surui Indios remained vigilant until the time of their arrival.

In 1988, two of the men who shot Father Ramin – Deuzelio Goncalves Fraga and Altamiro Flauzino – were condemned to respectively 24 and 25 years’ imprisonment by the Cuiabá tribunal. Others have not been identified nor arrested.

In 1998 RAI, the Italian national television network, commissioned La casa bruciata, a TV movie inspired by his life. It was directed by Massimo Spano with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone and featured Giulio Scarpati.

He was transferred to Cacoal located within Rondonia (Brazil). On January 20, 1984, he relocated to Brasilia in Brazil, where he received additional education in pastoral care. He eventually arrived in Rondonia at the end of July the same year.

Father Ezechiele Ramin MCCI (Padua, Italy, February 9 1953 — Ji-Parana, Rondonia, Brazil on July 24 1985) is well-known in the popular media as “Lele” in Italy and “Ezequiel” in Brazil, was an Italian Marxist Comboni missionary and artist, who was referred to as a martyr for charitable acts by the pope John Paul II after his death in Brazil while fighting for the rights of farmers and Surui indigenous people of the Rondonia region against local landowners.

The year was 1972 and he made the decision to attend the religious institution in the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus His studies led him to move initially to Florence and then to Venegono Inferiore (in the Province of Varese) and then to Chicago in the city where he received his degree from the Catholic Theological Union and served in the St. Ludmila Parish. After a stint of missions work with the poor Native Americans in South Dakota and, later, for a year and a half, at Baja California (Mexico), He was ordained as a priest the 28th of September, 1980, in his home town of Padua. The priest was assigned to the church in Naples but following the events of the 1980 Irpinia disaster, he relocated towards San Mango sul Calore to help the victims. He came back to Naples in 1981 and organized an early Pacific protests to stop camorra. The following year , he moved towards Troia in Apulia in Apulia, where he served as a point of contact of vocational associations.

The situation he was in brought him to fear for his life. In early 1985 he was threatened with being killed; in many of the letters he wrote to his family in that year he wonders if he will ever see them again.
