Eystein Jansen is one of the most popular and richest Geologist who was born on February 28, 1953 in Norway. He completed his studies at his time at the University of Bergen with a MSc in paleoceanography in 1881. He also earned the PhD award in the year 1984, with a the title “Late Weichselian paleoceanography in the Nordic Seas”.
Jansen has published over 200 papers in scientific journals on the relation with ocean circulation, climate changes, with special emphasis on the building up and disappearance of glaciers. His research focuses on ice sheets drawn from regions such as the Arctic as well as subarctic areas but his work also includes oceans within the Southern Hemisphere and the tropics. His research combines methods of sedimentology and geochemistry for ocean sediments gathered by active participation in the Ocean Drilling Program, the Images program and a variety of cruises aboard Norwegian vessels. In 2014, Jansen was awarded the ERC Synergy grant (ice2ice) to collaborate together with the other three principal investigators in the field of rapid climate change.
Jansen established and supervised his role as the founder and Director of Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research since the Centre’s inception from 2000 until 2013. The Centre was recognized as a Norwegian Centre of Excellence by the Norwegian Research Council in 2002.

Eystein Jansen (born on February 28th 1953 ) is an Norwegian professor of paleoceanography and marine geology in the University of Bergen, and director and researcher at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR).
Following his doctoral dissertation, Jansen was awarded an academic position, and was charged with the development of the National Laboratory for light stable isotope geochemistry at the University of Bergen, which was established in the year 1983. The creation of the laboratory has brought Jansen into contact with a number of the most prominent figures worldwide in the field of paleoclimatology. And particularly his close relationship to University of Cambridge scientist Nicholas Shackleton was the basis for his professional career. In 1985, Jansen was appointed as an associate professor with tenure of the University of Bergen, and the following year he was promoted to full professor.
He is a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council, he is the Academic Director of the Academia Europaea Bergen Knowledge Hub, and heads the Geoscience group of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Jansen is also co-director of the SapienCE Centre which is a Norwegian Centre of Excellence awarded by the Norwegian Research Council in 2017, and hosted by the University of Bergen, integrating archaeology, climate science and cognitive and neurosciences in studies of the emergence of modern behaviour in Homo sapiens in Southern Africa 120.000-50.000 years ago.
