Ewen Chatfield is one of the most popular and richest Cricketer who was born on July 3, 1950 in Dannevirke, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand. Ewen John Chatfield (born on July 3, 1950) was an ex- New Zealand cricketer who played 43 Tests as well as 114 One Day Internationals. A medium- pace player, his main weapon was his speed and efficiency, which resulted in economical bowling figures, though he would be a target during the final stage of limited-overs games because of a absence of variation in his line or length.
Through bat, Chatfield was a standout in his performances against the West Indies, the leading cricketing team at the time during the tour of 1984/85 as well as in the home series New Zealand drew in 1986/87. Chatfield was also a part of New Zealand sides which achieved the first-ever Test series victories against England and Australia both at both home and away. Chatfield was a major part of his career being the bowling partner of Sir Richard Hadlee. They have the same birthday, even though Chatfield is only one year older.
In the 1990 New Year Honours, Chatfield was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to cricket.
Since retiring from first-class cricket, Chatfield has had a variety of jobs. He coached the Hutt Valley association until they merged with Wellington, worked in a chip shop, was a courier and drove a van for a dairy. He also mowed lawns, and in 2009 was working as a taxi driver in Wellington.
A legendary no.11 batsman, during some of the best test matches of New Zealand cricket history, the batsman was paired with Wellington teammate Jeremy Coney in a partnership to beat Pakistan in Carisbrook, Dunedin, in the 1984/85 series of Test matches. This was technically not an end-of-the-world win because Lance Cairns was still available to bat, however Cairns was seriously injured during the time and was essentially incapable of batting, rendering Chatfield the team’s final hope to secure a series victory. Chatfield was able to score his best Test score of the unbeaten number 21. It was because Coney believed in his teammate that Chatfield was able to take on the equivalent of 84 balls during their match in comparison to Coney’s 48.
