Evgeniy Yuryevich Nager (Russian: Evgenii Iurevich Naer romanized as Evgeniy Yuryevich Nayer, born on June 22, 1977) is a Russian grandmaster of chess and the European champion of the year 2015. He is also a coach for the Russian women’s national team.
In 2015, he took in the European Individual Chess Championship in Jerusalem with an 8 1/2/11. This win allowed him to participate in an appearance in Chess World Cup 2015, which he was knocked out in the opening round, by Rauf Mamedov. Najer was the winner of in the 2015 Aeroflot Open edging out Boris Gelfand in a tiebreak after both players scored 6 1/2/9 points. The win was enough to get him into this year’s Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting. The year before, he was tied for the first spot together with Emil Sutovsky in the 18th Karpov Chess Tournament in Poikovsky, Russia. In 2019, while competing in FIDE’s Grand Swiss Tournament, FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019, Najer created a first round win over Viswanathan Anand with just 30 moves. He was the fourth seeded participant in the tournament, and a the former world champion.
Najer has won Najer won the World Open in Philadelphia consecutively in 2008 and 2009. He was among the second players of Gata Kamsky in 2009’s game against Veselin Topalov (“Challenger Match”). The month of July, 2009 saw Najer was the winner of the impressive round-robin event, which’s participants comprised Boris Gelfand and Judit Polgar as well as others from the Richard Riordan Chess Festival held at the 18th Maccabiah Games.
