Baylis played football in high school during his time at Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado. He received 33 passes for 456 yards and six touchdowns during his junior season, earning Colorado All-League 5A Creek First Team distinction in the offensive as an H-back as well as Honorable Mention All State recognition. He received 24 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns during his senior year, while making 108 tackles and eight sacks in his linebacker position. As as a senior, he selected to the All-League 5A 5A Creek 1st Team at the position of tight end/fullback and All-Colorado First Team on defense , and the 5A All-State First Team at linebacker.

Baylis was a member of The Oregon Ducks of the University of Oregon from 2013 until 2016. He was redshirted for the 2012 season. He was able to catch four passes for 70 yards during 2013. Baylis was able to catch 15 passes that accounted for 143 yards and a touchdown in 2014. This included five receptions of 25 yards during 2015. Prior to the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 14, Texans tight ends C. J. Fiedorowicz, Ryan Griffin and Stephen Anderson were all in the concussion protocol. As a result, Baylis was promoted to the active roster on September 13, 2017, and made his NFL debut as the only active tight end. He was waived by the Texans on September 20.
