Weissweiler is a member of the PEN Centre Germany and – after an interruption of several years – since the end of 2007 of the Verband deutscher Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftsteller [de] in the Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft, whose attitude towards right-wing extremism in her own ranks she has repeatedly and vehemently criticized. In May 2009, she established the group AURA 09 (Action of independent Rhine-Ruhr authors) in Cologne as well as an ensemble of 15 authors to help promote and encourage literary culture in the region. The group has been active within the area bordering between social work and literature and soon established its name in Cologne. In addition, it became the first organization in Cologne to remember the work of colleagues who lost their estates when they were evicted by the Historical Archive of the City of Cologne was destroyed. As spokespersons for the association as well as her husband, she served as the initiator and director of photography and writing classes for people suffering from mental illness The results of the courses were showcased in numerous exhibitions. In the aftermath of seven years hard efforts, the organization was disbanded in the autumn of 2016.
