Witkowsky (Evgenii Vladimirovich Vitkovskii 18 June 1950 – – February 3 2021) was an Russian novelist and writer poet, literary scholar, literary scholar and translator.

The year 2003 was the time that Witkowsky established the site “Vek Perevoda” (“The Age of Translation”, www.vekperevoda.com) with an online forum that functions as a school of poetry translation. Both in 2005 and 2006 Vodolei Publishers issued two anthologies of Russian poetic translation that were inspired by the collection of the site which were edited and written by Witkowsky The second edition will continue.

In the 90s the author was mostly involved in literary studies, composing and editing four volumes of an collection of Russian poetry from abroad “We lived on a different planet those days”, the three-volume collection of Georgy Ivanov, works of Ivan Yelagin, Arseny Nesmelov and many others. The three- volume historical fantasy “Paul II” was published in 2000. It was followed by 2 sequels were released “Saint Vitus Land” and “Chertovar” in 2001 and 2007 respectively. The two books were chosen to be part of the shortlist for the most highly coveted Russian Prize for F&SF, “The ABS Prize” (“Arkady and Boris Strugatsky Prize”).

Witkowsky was born into a family comprised of Russified Germans who owned a small factory of cardboard in Moscow. He spent his early years living in Siberia, Central Asia, and Western Ukraine. From 1967 to 1971 He was a student in literature in Moscow State University, then took a break and did not return, after which he became involved in literary and dissident activities. In the years before censorship was abolished in the USSR, Witkowsky could only publish poetry translations. He published and translated a variety of poems written by John Milton, Christopher Smart, Robert Southey, John Keats, Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling; by Scottish gaelic poets John Roy Stewart, Duncan Ban MacIntyre, Rob Donn, John MacLean (Bard MacLean) as well as by Luis Vaz de Camoes, Fernando Pessoa, Rainer Maria Rilke Joost van den Vondel Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Valery and many others.

Witkowsky was the laureate of numerous international awards. He was also an expert in the Translators Union of Russia as well as a writer’s Union of the USSR and Russia from 1983. His poetry mentors include Arcadiy Shteinberg as well as Sergei Petrov.

In 2007, the same publisher printed an anthology “Seven Centuries of English Poetry” in three volumes (about 3000 pages), compiled by Witkowsky and presenting for the first time in a single edition works by almost 500 English- language poets from 1300 to 2000 recreated by 134 translators since the 1800s. This anthology exceeds twentyfold any other previous Russian edition devoted to the poets of England, Scotland and Ireland.
