Esther San Miguel is one of the most popular and richest Judoka who was born on March 5, 1975 in Burgos, Spain. Esther San Miguel Busto (born May 5, 1975, in Burgos) was a Spanish Judoka from Spain. She has been awarded six national titles as well as two European titles in the division of half heavyweight (78 kilograms). She also was the bronze medalist of the 2003 World Judo Championships in Osaka, Japan, and has collected a total of twenty- seven World Cup medals, including eight gold medals. San Miguel is a member of the Centro de Alto Rendimiento Madrid Judo Club and is coach by Sacramento Moyano.
In 2009, at the European Judo Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, San Miguel took home a gold medal in the half-heavyweight division, her first win in 11 years. She defeated Ukraine’s Maryna Pryshchepa at the finals.
San Miguel was selected to participate at the 3rd time, in the ladies half- heavyweight category at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She made it to the semi-finals of the competition by defeating Vera Moskalyuk of Russia, Brazil’s Edinanci Silva as well as Lucia Morico of Italy in the preliminary matches before her. San Miguel however, was defeated against China’s Yang Xiuli, who scored three yukos and an ippon during the final second. In the event that her opponent was able to advance straight to the finals San Miguel proceeded to the bronze medal match. However, she fell to the French’s Stephanie Possamai by a high-scoring waza-ari. She finished in fifth position.

From 1991 onward, San Miguel had been participating in numerous tournaments in Spain and Europe and has won many medals which included her first gold medal during the 1998 European Judo Championships in Oviedo. She was selected to represent for Spain in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney in which she was defeated by South Korean’s Lee So-yeon, who was in the repechage match in the women’s half-heavyweight division (78 kilograms). In 2003, at the World Judo Championships in Osaka, Japan, she made her first international appearance with her the gold medal from the 78kg category.
In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, San Miguel lost the first preliminaries match against the Great British’s Rachel Wildin, who scored an automatic ippon during the half-heavyweight competition. Despite the setback she suffered at during the Olympics, San Miguel continued to take home additional bronze awards during the European Championships, and was capable of winning her very first medal of gold at the Mediterranean Games in Almeria.
