Overton participated in her first Australian National Championships. Before the competition she applied for an exemption to be able to wear a swimsuit with an opening for zippers. After this request was denied she tried to wear a legal swimming suit and broke her arm however she was able to continue competing despite the injury. She took part in the 2010 Paralympic World Championships. In the 2011, Para Pacific Championships, she was third in the 50m backstroke race. In October of 2011 she was given a new coach. In the run- up to 2012’s National Championships, she was suffering from three discs in her spine that were bulging as the result of her swimming into the wall just three weeks prior to the competition.

Overton is a S1 classified swimmer. When swimming, she cannot use her arms and uses her head instead of hands on the touchpad. She competes in the 50 metres backstroke, freestyle. Overton is a member of the Burnside Swimming Club. She is coached by Shelly Camy, who became her coach eighteen months before the start of the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Part of her training includes Pilates.

In April 2013 at the age of 23, Overton retired from professional swimming. She was forced to consider her future after a lack of competitor interest in her classification led to the cancellation her event at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships.

Overton is afflicted with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, an illness that “causes muscle weakness and a tendency for bones to break easily.” The condition also leads to joints that aren’t mobile. Her arm has been injured more than 40 times. She has also dealt with numerous bulging discs, and has had six operations on her knee since 2008. Because of her impairment she’s required the mobility of an electric scooter, and suffers from constant pain.

Overton began swimming in an exercise physiotherapist when she was a babyand began competing when she was twelve years old. She made her debut for the national team in 2006 at the IPC World Championships in Durban where she won silver in the 50-metre backstroke and butterfly events. She took part in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in two events. In the 50m backstroke, she came in fifth. In the freestyle 50m event she came in sixth. Seven weeks prior to she competed in the 2008 Games, she had an unresponsive lung. A day prior to the start of the Games she injured her arm.

As a twenty-two-year-old, Overton was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in the 50 metre backstroke S2 and the 50 metre freestyle S3 events. She was one of three South Australians representing Australia in swimming at the Paralympics.
