Duflo along with Abhijit Banerjee have been taking an concern for India from 1997. She carried out an experiment to test teacher absenteeism in 120 of the schools that were run by a non-profit organisation. In a bid to encourage teachers to take photos of themselves and their students every day and capturing them with their students, she was capable of reducing the amount of time they were absent.

After earning her PhD in 1999, Duflo became an assistant professor at MIT. She was promoted to associate professor (with tenure) in 2002, at 29, making her among the youngest faculty members to be awarded tenure, and to full professor in 2003.

In 2003, she co-founded Poverty Action Lab at MIT, which has since conducted over 200 empirical development experiments and trained development practitioners to run randomized controlled trials. The lab has branches in Chennai, India and at the Paris School of Economics. In 2006, together with several colleagues, Duflo conducted another experiment in India. It showed that taped speeches by women were more readily accepted in villages that had experienced women leaders. Duflo became increasingly convinced that communities supporting women candidates could expect economic benefits, but she experienced difficulty in convincing her peers. Focused on assessing developments addressing social welfare, in 2008, she received the Frontier of Knowledge award for development cooperation. Duflo entered the public sphere in 2013, when she sat on the new Global Development Committee, which advised former US President Barack Obama on issues regarding development aid in poor countries.

She graduated with a studies in economics and history in the Ecole Normale Superieure in 1994 and earned a master’s diploma from DELTA which is now known as known as the Paris School of Economics, in conjunction with the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) of the Universite Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) as well as at the Ecole Normale Superieure, in 1995. In the following year, she was awarded her PhD in economics from MIT in 1999 under the direction from Abhijit Banerjee, and Joshua Angrist. The research for her PhD thesis focused on the effects of a natural study involving an Indonesian school expansion program in the 1970s. It proved conclusively that in a developing nation the higher level of education led to more lucrative earnings. After completing her PhD in 2001, she was made as an assistant Professor of Economics in MIT as well. She has been with MIT since then, apart from a short leave in Princeton University in 2001-2002, and also at Paris School of Economics in 2007 and 2017. Esther Duflo, FBA (French birth date: [dyflo] on the 25th of October, 1972) is an economist from France and America that is currently known as the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She was the co-founder and director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Laboratory that was founded in 2003. She won with the winners of 2019’s Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences along with Abhijit Banerjee as well as Michael Kremer, “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.

After completing the B/L program at Lycee Henri IV’s Classes preparatoires, Duflo began her undergraduate studies at Ecole normale superieure in Paris and was planning to major in the subject of history, which has been her passion since the age of. After her sophomore year of study, she began contemplating a career in political or civil service. She was stationed for ten months in Moscow beginning in 1993. Her teaching duties included French and completed a historical thesis that explained the ways in which it was that the Soviet Union “had used the big construction sites, like the Stalingrad tractor factory, for propaganda, and how propaganda requirements changed the actual shape of the projects.” In Moscow she also served as an assistant researcher an French economist who was a part of Russia’s Central Bank of Russia and independently for Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist who was working with his Russian Ministry of Finance. The experiences she had at these research positions have led her to conclude she believed that “economics had potential as a lever of action in the world” and she was able to fulfill her academic ambitions and do “things that mattered”.

Duflo is married to MIT professor Abhijit Banerjee; the couple have two children. Banerjee was a joint supervisor of Duflo’s PhD in economics at MIT in 1999.
