Zavar received a life sentence prison at Zavar was sentenced to life imprisonment by Ankara State Security Court No. 2 in 2001 for the crime of trying to alter the constitution in accordance to Article 46 in the Turkish Penal Code. He was taken to Tekirdag Prison No. 1 to serve his sentence. Zavar was said to be ignored by the prison and hospital personnel after being found to have bladder cancer.
In 2004 an effort was put together through his legal counsel, wife and family members due to his condition. The campaign led to his being treated for cancer. In spite of having nine operations, his health declined. In 2006 the campaign was initiated under the slogan Don’t let this light go out. The campaign is ongoing.
