At the age of 13, he performed the role of the lead character on the stage musical Oliver alongside Husnes’ locally-based “Blandakor” in Husnes. Then he took part in the show Chess in neighboring Bomlo. He was also a part of Ungdommens Kulturmonstring (UKM) and reached the semi-finals.
In the early part of the year 2008 Bratland was a participant in the Bergen auditions of Norske Talenter where he, wearing an white Marilyn Manson T-shirt sang “O Holy Night”. He made it through to the main round, and soon became a popular. In the semi-final, he performed “Nella Fantasia” as the last contestantand took the top spot in the vote of the public. At the end of the show, he performed “Lost” by Anouk, and again, as the last contestant who won the show by securing 36% votes, beating the second-placed Vegard A. Dommersnes, an eight-year-old Hula hoop performer. Following the finale the contestant recorded his debut song, “Lost”, which was his song from his final contestant round.
In early 2010, Bratland retired from the spotlight after suffering from a burnout following his massive workload the previous two years. He relocated to Bergen, where he resumed his studies to become a hair dresser. He graduated the following spring, and has worked as a hair dresser in Bergen since. In a 2011 interview with VG, he did not deny a possible comeback in the future, but confirmed that music was no longer his main priority, as he got “fed up with being famous”.
In December 2012, Bratland announced that he had begun working on new material for his previously announced second album, which he quit working on after retiring in 2010. He announced that the new album, of which no date or title has been set, would be darker and more personal than his previous record. He has since his retirement abandoned his recognized emo style for a more androgynous, compared by some to Adam Lambert. On 7 December 2012 he made his first television appearance in over two and a half years.
After winning, Bratland took part in the Norwegian Idol tour during the summer of 2008 in concert with Norwegian Idol winner Glenn Lyse as well as other contestants from both shows.

Erlend Bratland (born 27 October 1991 in Husnes, Kvinnherad, Norway) is a Norwegian singer from Norway. Most famous for winning Norske Talenter 2008, a Norwegian TV talent show.
On the 16th of May the same day, just two weeks after winning the Norske Talenter the song he had written “Lost” was made available to downloading by Telenor. In the following day, “Lost” climbed to No. 4 on VG’s list of singles and then hit No. 1 two weeks later. On October 27, Sony BMG released his debut album True Colours, which hit gold status within a short period of time. Following the release of the album it was announced that he had been named for 2008’s Spellemannsprisen most promising new talent award. He also had the album’s lead track “Lost” nominated for song of the year. However, the singer did not win any awards. The band then returned to touring and announced an album 2 was being planned.
Bratland publicly acknowledged that he was gay during an interview with God Kveld, Norge in 2010, after two years of speculation from the press. In a 2011 interview, he stated that he had been aware of his homosexuality “as long as I’ve known”, and that his friends and family had been equally aware of it.
