Miyuki Nakajima was born in Sapporo in February 1952. Buichi was her grandfather and Shinichi was her father. They ran an obstetrics clinic and gynecology clinic. When she was five years old, her family moved to Iwanai. They stayed there for six more years. She spent her teens in Obihiro where she was one the most prominent Obihiro Hakuyou high school graduates, alongside singer Miwa Yoshida, and Shinichiro Azumi, a television announcer. In 1974, she graduated from Sapporo’s Fuji Women’s University.

Her song “Kizutsuita Tsubasa” (Wings of Love, I Knew Nothing), won a prize in the Yamaha Music Foundation’s 9th Popular Song Contest. After signing a contract to Yamaha and Canyon Records, she released “Azami Jo no Lillaby”, which was released in September 1975. Nakajima entered October’s Popular Song Contest with “Jidai”, a song that won the prize. The song won the grand-prix at the 6th World Popular Song Festival. Another award was organized by Yamaha in December.

Miyuki Nakajima’s fifth single “Wakareuta (The Parting Song)”, released in September 1977, became her commercial breakthrough as a singer. The song reached number one on the Oricon for one week in December 1977, knocking “Wanted (Shimei Tehai)” by Pink Lady from the top of the hit parade. “The Parting Song” has sold more than 700,000 copies.

Throughout her over 40-year career, she has written over 100 songs for other artists, including “Shiawase Shibai” (recorded by Junko Sakurada), “Kamome wa Kamome” (a comeback single for Ken, released in 1978), and “If I Could Take to the Sky (Kono Sora wo Tobetara)” (performed by Tokiko Kato, released in 1978). Nakajima occasionally released retrospective albums, composed of songs written for other artists. The first one, Okaerinasai, released in 1979, has sold more than 500,000 units, and it became one of her best-selling albums.

She won the songwriting prize for “Atashi Tokidoki Omouno” in a folk contest held at Tokyo’s Hibiya Open Air Concert Hall. This song was her first recording.
