Erik Nels Rasmussen (born January 27th 1957) is an American meteorologist who is a an expert on mesoscale meteorology severe convective storms forecasting storms, and tornadogenesis. His role was as the coordinator of field for the very first in the VORTEX projects from 1994 to 1995 and the lead chief investigator of VORTEX2 from 2009 to 2010 and VORTEX-SE between 2016 and 2017 and was also involved in smaller VORTEX offshoots as well as numerous field research projects.

The meteorology course he took as a freshman was located at his home institution, the University of Oklahoma (OU) in Norman where he graduated with an B.Sc. in the year 1980. In 1980, he began research on the field with Howard Bluestein, chasing supercells and tornadoes and studying the structure of thunderstorms and processes. He continued his studies at the graduate program in Texas Tech University (TTU) in Lubbock where he graduated with an M.Sc. on atmospheric sciences, in 1982. At grad school, he earned an image as an skilled forecaster and interceptor of severe tornadoes and storms. He was known as “The Dryline Kid” in reference to the dry line that creates isolated storms and tornadoes. The thesis he wrote was The Tulia Outbreak Storm: Mesoscale evolution and photogrammetric analysis.

Rasmussen became a research meteorologist at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) and then the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS). After the study of squall lines his interest returned to supercells from the microphysical aspects of cloud particles to mesoscale environments modulating storm behavior. He was the field commander (FC) of Project VORTEX in 1994-1995 where he worked with lead forecaster Charles A. Doswell III, participated in SUB-VORTEX and VORTEX-99, STEPS, IHOP, and served on the steering committee and was a lead principal investigator (PI) for VORTEX2 in 2009-2010 as well as project manager for VORTEX-SE in 2016-2017.
