Erik Hokkanen is one of the most popular and richest Musician who was born on February 23, 1963 in Clearwater, Florida, United States. Erik Hokkanen (born February 23 1993) is an American guitarist, fiddler and composer who lives in Austin, Texas. Erik is famous for performing and writing a variety of styles in music, including western swing, gypsy rock music, surf rock bluegrass music, rockabilly and classical. He effortlessly moves between instruments, usually playing the his violin while an electric guitar is hung on his back. Third generation Finn born within Florida, Erik has toured extensively across Scandinavia performing at major festivals and venues with the best Finnish musicians.

Since 1998 Erik began his tenure as Professor of Music at the Folk Music Department of the famous Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. While there when he was there, he recorded his first album with Lumisudet “In the Heart of the Waking Dream,” and also performed in concert with this group. In the class the violinist taught guitar, theory of music as well as American musical styles. In a fascinating aside, Erik discovered his second cousin Hannu Tolvanen also worked for Sibelius Academy. Sibelius Academy, just three doors away to Erik’s workplace! Erik was delighted to greet him by saying “Hi, cuz! Hyvaa Paivaa!” They remain friends to this day.

In 2009, Erik was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. It has been said that pound for pound, Erik is the most talented musician in Austin.

In Texas, Erik performs concerts and teaches music. In January 2012, he was the guest musician on Larry Monroe’s Texas Radio Live show broadcast on KDRP from Guero’s Taco Bar on South Congress Street.

While back in Texas Erik’s popularity increased, after being named a three- time winner of his Kerrville Folk Festival Music Awards’ “Instrumentalist of the year” (1993-1995) and admitted into the Kerville Festival’s Music Hall of Fame in 1996. In 1996, we also saw John Travolta dancing to Erik’s fiddle tunes (“Erik’s Two Step”) in the film “Michael.”

At the age of 21 Erik relocated from Austin, TX and joined Gary P. Nunn’s group and played all over the Southwest. In the year 1986 Erik began his own group dubbed “Erik & the Offbeats” and released his debut album. Another major breakthrough was in 1987, when Erik performed in Finland at first, and played at The Kaustinen Folk Festival. After that first great success, Erik returned to Kaustinen in 1988 and performed on numerous tours with a regular appearance at rock and blues festivals alongside the famous Finnish musician Dave Lindholm. The year 1989 saw Erik came back to Finland along with his brother Niles who is a skilled mandolinist who performed and taught classes in Kaustinen as well as Haapavesi. The year 1994 saw Erik was back in Finland to join the all-star band “Lumisudet” with Arto Jarvela, Petri Hakala, and Tapani Varis. The group recorded “Kaustinen, TX,” the first of three albums. The guest stars were Mauno Jarvela Napparit, Janne Viksten, Janne Haavisto, Dave Lindholm, Kimmo Pohjonen, and Timo Alakotila. Journalist Pirkko Kotirinta of The Helsinki Sanomat, declared the album of as 1995’s “Album of the Year.” It was the year that Kaustinen Folk Festival Institute released Erik’s track “Kaustinen, TX” as single, which received lots of radio airplay across Finland. Erik came back in the year 1996 to perform an encore tour with Lumisudet. They appeared on radio and TV and also on festivals.

From the early 1990s onwards Erik was a frequent part of Native American singer Joanne Shenandoah’s band, performing throughout across the United States and even playing Carnegie Hall in 2006.

Erik’s next Scandinavian wave began in 2003 when he reunited with Lumisudet, touring in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, as well as Finland. They continued touring each spring from 2003-2007, culminating in the recording of their third album, “Cosmic Meltdown,” which was recorded in Järvenpää, just down the road from Sibelius’ historic Ainola home. Erik’s guest stars on this album included Maria Kalaniemi, J. Karjalainen, as well as regulars from previous recordings.
