Eric Derk Wiebes (born 12 March 1963) is an Dutch politician who has been the Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in the third Rutte cabinet from 26 October 2017. It is an official of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).

On January 30, 2014 Frans Weekers was appointed State Secretary of Finance. In his role as successor to Weekers Wiebes, he was charged with resolving the issues facing the Tax and Customs Administration. He was appointed on the 4th of February. In May 2015, following an investigation by a panel made up of members of the European Parliament on a tax agreement the Netherlands reached together with Starbucks, Wiebes stated that the Netherlands wasn’t an tax haven.

He was appointed an alderman in Amsterdam beginning on May 19th 2010 to 4 February from 1990 until. Following the departure of Frans Weekers as the State Secretary of Finance, Wiebes was nominated to succeed him, and then was elected as an alderman. He was appointed to the second cabinet of the Second Rutte government after the general elections in 2017 he was tapped to be the Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.

Wiebes was born in Delft and was raised in Muiderberg. His father was a nuclear physicist and died when he was just nine years old. He finished his Vwo (secondary schooling) in the nearby town of Bussum with a degree in 1981. He continued his education the following time with Delft University of Technology studying mechanical engineering. In 1986, he received an engineer’s degreeand specialization in the policy aspects in the field of the government. Amsterdam was looking for an alderman who was part of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy. Eric van der Burg, the leader of the local PPD was asked by Van Beek if he knew someone who could be a candidate. Van Beek then advised choosing Wiebes. Premier Mark Rutte put Wiebes name in the mix too. Wiebes took the offer. As an alderman in Amsterdam Wiebes was able to address controversial subjects like municipal ICT as well as air quality, construction of the Noord/Zuidlijn Metro-line, as well as the taxi market in the city.

On 26 October 2017, Wiebes was appointed Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in the Third Rutte cabinet.
