Schmitt was elected as an alderman in Glendale, Missouri, from 2005 until 2008. In November of 2008 Schmitt became a member of his seat in the Missouri Senate. After he was sworn in, Schmitt became one of the youngest senators to ever be elected to the state’s top chamber. He was a member of the fifteenth State Senate district, which encompasses portions of western and central St. Louis County. In the wake of the census in 2010 Schmitt’s district was redredrawn but it’s still concentrated on the central part of St. Louis County. The 28th of February, 2012 Schmitt applied for reelection to his 15th District. Schmitt was unopposed both in the general and primary elections of 2012.
In 2014, Congress passed the Stephen Beck Jr., Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act to allow eligible individuals with disabilities to save money while still allowing those individuals to be eligible for federal needs- based benefits. In June 2015, then-Senator Eric Schmitt passed the state legislation, making the state a leader in the ABLE movement. Missouri ABLE was launched in April 2017.
In addition, Schmitt worked to enact the federal ABLE Act, to provide 529 savings account opportunities to families with children with special needs, to cover their future costs and allow them to be more financially independent and self-sufficient. The Missouri ABLE program allows anyone to make a tax- deductible contribution of up to $8,000 for an individual or $16,000 for married couples to another person’s ABLE account. The bill sponsored by Schmitt was signed by the Governor in 2015.
Schmitt became a member of the Missouri bar in the year 2000. As a lawyer, he was part of the team in the law firm Lathrop & Gage, LLP located which is located in Clayton, Missouri, where the focus was on land use real estate, administrative appeals. In the community he was an active member of the board of DeSmet Jesuit High School, Nurses for Newborns Foundation, St. Louis Crisis Nursery as well as an Parents as Teachers Program. He was previously elected chairperson of the Young Lawyer Section Council of the Missouri Bar as well as the director of the state-wide Giving Tree effort to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and established the Special Needs Advocacy Task Force. He also has been involved in his involvement with the TS (Tuberous Sclerosis) Alliance, the Gateway Chapter of the Autism Society of America, Habitat for Humanity, and local Chambers of Commerce.

Eric S. Schmitt (born 20th June 1975) is an American politician who has been an Attorney General in the state of Missouri since the year 2019. He was Secretary of State for the state of Missouri from 2017 to the year 2019. Prior to that, he was an elected part of the Missouri Senate serving the state’s 15th State Senate District, from 2009 until 2017. He also served as an alderman from Glendale, Missouri from 2005 to 2008, and was one of two aldermen in Ward 3. On November 13, 2018, Schmitt was named Attorney General of Missouri by Governor Mike Parson, after the incumbent, Josh Hawley, was elected to the United States Senate.
Schmitt was a graduate of DeSmet Jesuit High School in 1993, and then graduated in Truman State University in 1997 in which he graduated with an undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Arts Cum laude of political science. In Truman, Schmitt was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity, played baseball and football, and was the founding member of the Truman’s Habitat for Humanity chapter. He was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to study at Saint Louis University School of Law which is where he received the Juris Doctor in 2000. Schmitt was editor of the law journal and published an article on his analysis of the Supreme Court decision in Clinton v. New York.
Schmitt was absent in the 2013 failed vote to pass the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act, and supported a 2016 failed measure to protect businesses that oppose same-sex marriages for religious reasons.
