Eric Steven Lander (born February 3 1957) is a mathematician and geneticist. professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and also Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School Formerly a participant in the Whitehead Institute, and founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He was co-chairman of U.S. President Barack Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He was an 1988 MacArthur Fellow.

The year 1989 was the first time Lander was a witness for expert in the case involving criminals: People v. Castro in New York. He demonstrated that the current technique of interpreting DNA data was in error and was prone to provide fake positives, thereby implicating innocent defendants. Two lawyers representing defense involved in this instance, Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck were later able to establish The Innocence Project, an organization that uses the analysis of DNA to exonerate wrongly convicted prisoners. Lander is an officer on the board of directors.

In 2001, a draft of the human genome was published in the journal Nature. The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Center for Genome Research, was listed first (the order was according to total genomic sequence contributed). Lander was the first author named.

Lander was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of our time (2004) for his work on the HGP. Lander has also appeared in numerous PBS documentaries about genetics. He was listed at #2 on the MIT150 list of the top 150 innovators and ideas from MIT.

He was later introduced to David Botstein, a geneticist who was working at MIT. Botstein was researching ways to discover how subtle variations between complex genes could cause diseases like schizophrenia, diabetes, cancer and obesity. They collaborated on the development of an algorithm for computers to study the gene maps. Lander later joined the Whitehead Institute in 1986; in the is the year that he was made an associate professor of MIT. Lander was given the highly coveted MacArthur Fellowship in 1987. He was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship in 1990. established the Whitehead Institute/MIT Centre for Genomics Research (WICGR). The WICGR has since become one of the most renowned genomic research centers, and under Lander’s direction it made significant progress in developing innovative methods of analysing mammalian genomes. It also made major advances in applying these findings to study the human genetic variations, and provided the Broad Institute’s founding revolution which Lander led.
