Eric Kattus (born March 4 1963) is an ex-professional American football tight-end who played with the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). He also played for the New York Jets of the NFL. He was a college player with the Michigan Wolverines football team where the captain was the team in the year 1985. He was also a part in the 1982 Big Ten Conference Champions.
After graduating from Colerain High School, Kattus was a student studying at The University of Michigan, where there was a redshirt year. He was an varsity letterman for the next four years and wore the number 81. As a freshman redshirt, Kattus was part of 1982’s Big Ten Champions who went to the Rose Bowl. In his school, the University of Michigan he earned All Big Ten Conference honors during his senior season. As captain, he played every single game of Bo Schembechler’s Michigan team which ended the season as second on both A.P. and U.P.I. polls following and U.P.I. polls following a Fiesta Bowl victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers gave them a 10-1-0 record for the year. Kattus scored 8 touchdowns in the Wolverines in his 38 receptions, which totaled 582 yards. Three times Kattus caught six passes in the season, he scored at least one touchdown, and twice the score was two. In another game in which five passes were caught, the only time he played 100-yard game, scoring scores of 123 yards as well as an touchdown. His senior season was an improvement from the previous seasons with seven receptions totaling sixty yards, and two scores.
He did not make any passes as an employee of Bruce Coslet’ 4-12 1992 New York Jets in his final season. Kattus joined the Jets following Johnny Mitchell was placed on injured reserve. Kattus was a part of his Bengals time in the shadows of his fellow tight-end Rodney Holman who played for the Bengals from 1982 until 1992, and made it to the Pro Bowl three consecutive years between 1988 and 1990. The only time during Kattus’ Bengals tenure that Holman didn’t play in every single game of the regular season was the one in which Kattus was his most successful. Kattus’ Bengals were in playoff play for five times during Kattus time in Cincinnati however Kattus only took a catch in one. He actually was able to catch two passes, resulting in 19 yards and scored a touchdown in the opening round of the game of the Wild Card game in the 1990-91 NFL playoffs. In the six years he played, the Bengals were winners of the two American Football Conference central division championships (1988 and 1990). They took home the conference championship, but were defeated by their rivals the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIII.
