Eric Eugene Crouch (born November 16th 1978) was a former American football player. Crouch is also a TV sports analyst and a recreational equipment dealer.
In 2001, Crouch was in his best season and broke the school’s or NCAA records on a regular basis and proving to be an extremely strong contender for the Heisman Trophy. In the opening game of the campaign, an 21-7 loss at TCU, Crouch surpassed Tommie Frazier as Nebraska’s all time total offensive leader. Crouch became the Big 12 all-time career rushing quarterback during the emotional contest against Rice. The following week, in the game against Missouri, Crouch was backed by defenders near the goal line. He was able to scramble to avoid opponents and score a 95-yard touchdown runthat was the longest run in school history. When he faced Iowa State the following week, Crouch broke the record for the most career touchdowns scored by quarterbacks. Crouch was the fourth quarterback to ever in Division 1 history to both throw and rush for 3,000 yards over the course of a career when he played at the hands of Texas Tech. In a subsequent, hard-fought match against the defending champions of national football Oklahoma, Crouch again showed his speed and his playing skills and was this time a the quarterback and receiver on one game that was the infamous “Black 41 Flash Reverse Pass” where Crouch recorded a 63-yard touchdown. By the middle of November, Crouch had established the school record for the many career wins as a starter , and was only ninth- ranked quarterback in the history of D-1A who has won more than 35 games as an active player. The Cornhuskers were 11-0 entering the annual game against Colorado on the day following Thanksgiving. Crouch was a star and set an all- time record in the field for offensive yards within one game, with 360 yards. Nebraska’s Nebraska defense was defeated by the Buffaloes however, and recorded a record-setting of 62 points to Colorado. The loss of 62-36 was believed to end Nebraska’s chance of winning the national championship and diminished Crouch’s chances to win the Heisman. A few weeks later, Crouch was announced as the winner of the award, beating over Miami’s Rex Grossman and Miami’s Ken Dorsey in the tightest Heisman vote since the year 1985. Crouch’s outstanding performance was acknowledged when he received the Davey O’Brien award for being the best college quarterback in the country in 2001. While he was away, several teams that were highly ranked were disappointed and, in the final BCS ratings, Nebraska beat out one-loss Oregon and two-loss Colorado to secure the no. 2 position on the BCS rankings. Final BCS rankings were fraught with controversy as Nebraska was able to take part for the Rose Bowl for the national championship despite having not won any division or conference championship. At the Rose Bowl on January 3 2002 Crouch ran for 114 yards in the match against Miami Hurricanes but was denied scoring a touchdown in the same way for the first time since Sept 1999. The No. #1 Hurricanes beat the Cornhuskers 37-14 leaving Crouch with a 37-0 record as a quarterback who started the game.
Crouch’s opportunity to play quarterback at the professional level finally came when he signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League on February 15, 2006 as a quarterback. (The Argonauts had owned his CFL rights for several years.) In his inaugural CFL season Crouch eventually became the fourth-string quarterback in Toronto, behind Damon Allen, Michael Bishop, and Spergon Wynn. On July 22, 2006, Crouch made his regular season CFL debut against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina, Saskatchewan. Coming in at the start of the second half following an injury to Wynn, Crouch sealed the win for Toronto with solid play, including a 94-yard pass completion to Arland Bruce III.
On September 25, 2007, Crouch signed with the upstart All-American Football League. He was drafted 3rd overall by Team Texas on January 26, 2008, in the first round of the league’s inaugural draft. He was, however, released from his contract (along with all AAFL players) when the league canceled its debut season.
Crouch played in the NCAA football tournament for at the University of Nebraska. In 2001, Crouch was awarded the Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the best college footballer across the United States. Crouch also received the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award which is given each year to the best college quarterbacks across the US. In the year he was Nebraska’s alternative offense Crouch completed the ball 105 times with 1,510 yards, seven touchdowns and 7 as well as running for 1,115 yards as well as 18 scores. Crouch was named the USA Today Nebraska Player of the Year and was an All-American in the Parade from Millard North High School, which was where he made two times an All-State selection as a quarterback.
