He began his career in journalism as a sportswriter at The Irish Times and Sunday Tribune where he received numerous awards and was appointed sports editor. In the pursuit of a career beyond sports journalism He became a part of The Sunday Press as a feature writer in 1985 . He was named features editor at The Irish Press in 1986 with the intention of bringing young writers and a more modern literary, polemical and poetic style of writing to the newspaper.
