After a brief stint with Tercera Division club Huercal-Overa CF, Mendy went back abroad in the beginning of 2016 to join CSM Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt in Liga II, a team that refused to pay their players other than a meal a day in an impromptu soup kitchen. After losing seven kilograms during the experience, he came back to Spain’s fourth division at CA Pulpileno. In January 2017, he stepped into the next level, signing as a player for CD Eldense in Segunda Division B and triggered an investigation by police in April of that year, after he told Cadena SER that the club’s assistant manager, Fran Ruiz, had instructed him to play an opponent with FC Barcelona B.
