2001 proved to be Sawyer’s last season as a full-time driver in NASCAR. He was a competitive racer with a record high in top-ten finishes, 19 times over one season, and finishing fiveth on points. However, the team failed to find a sponsor after the season ended and the team folded, forcing Sawyer to look for a vehicle for 2002. Sawyer continued to search for a ride, however the driver was unable to locate one due to the current trend of teams seeking young drivers to be sponsored by sponsors.
On February 2, 2015, NASCAR announces that Sawyer would become the Managing Director of the Camping World Truck Series, replacing Chad Little, who was moved to a new role within the organization. Sawyer had previously served as the Director of Team Operations for Action Express Racing in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
Sawyer began his 1996 Cup season as a driver for David Blair Motorsports. But, due to sponsorship issues the team was able to remove him by the organization. Then, he decided to go back to Busch but he could not get a good ride until 1997 when Sawyer returned to Sutton. Sawyer was able to be eighth in the points. The year 1998 was his best. enjoyed an excellent year and finished 5th in points. He also scored 10 top 10s. As of 1999, Sawyer was a part of Akins Motorsports to compete in the Busch Series. Sawyer was one of his best years in the sport and won a race in 1999 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Sawyer also achieved 14 top tens and was 5th in points. Also, 2000 proved to be very successful year for Sawyer as he scored again 14 top tens , and was 6th in point scoring.

Sawyer began his racing career with racing in NASCAR Busch Series. He raced in a few races in 1984, 1983 and 1985, securing eight top tens, while running the team he owns. From 1986 until 1989, Sawyer ran full-time seasons for Lewis Motorsports. Sawyer was a competitive athlete and scored numerous top tens and finishing between 14th to 18th in points throughout those seasons. Sawyer was dismissed from the Lewis team having not won during his four seasons with the team, and moved to the team of A.G. Dillard. As of 1990, Sawyer enjoyed his finest career year, scoring four best fives while finishing thirteenth on points. The next year Sawyer’s Dillard team was plagued by sponsorship issues which prevented Sawyer from running the entire year. He managed to finish 20th in the points race that year. The issues with sponsorship that affected Sawyer from 1991 created issues for him over the next two years. Sawyer was unable to get a reliable ride and only participated in four races.
However, the luck of the draw did not change the way of Sawyer in 1994, when Sawyer found himself in a good position in Sutton Racing. He would later take home his very first Busch Series race at Myrtle Beach Speedway. The race would be his only one of six top tens in the remainder of the year which saw him finish fourteenth on points. As of 1995 Sawyer drove in the Busch Series full- time for Sutton and was then selected to take over the role of Loy Allen Jr. as the driver of No. 27 Winston Cup car Junior Johnson & Associates. Sawyer’s Cup season was not poorly, but his Busch year was his most successful to date, coming in the 9th position in point scoring. The similar year Sawyer participated with his first race, the Winston Select, driving the No. 27 car driven by Junior Johnson that made it in due to Jimmy Spencer winning twice the previous year.
