As a child within New England, Hovey’s athletic primary focus was downhill skiing. After high school, he had dropped out of the sport and began the rowing journey with Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut (1999). He quickly rose up the ranks of Salisbury’s Crew hoping to follow his grandfather’s example and to row for the Ivy League college team.
In the course of his work, Hovey posted nationally ranked Concept2 Ergometer scores for the 2000 meters tests at the junior level. Hovey was invited to attend his US Junior National Rowing Team selection camps in 2000 as well as
- Both of these camps were held in the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hovey was not selected and was dropped off from the two teams. Hovey was later enlisted by two coaches Booth Kyle and Ed Kloman (2000) along with Evans Liolin and Colin Campbell (2001) to row for his Boston Rowing Center’s (BRC) junior development teams for men. Both of his years at BRC were very successful.
