Ellen Kuras is one of the most popular and richest Cinematographer who was born on July 10, 1959 in New Jersey, United States. Ellen Kuras (born July 10 1959) is an American cinematographer, whose work includes documentary and narrative films as well as music videos and commercials in the independent and studio realms. One of the few female members of the American Society of Cinematographers, she is an early pioneer, best known for her work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). She has worked with directors like Michel Gondry, Spike Lee, Sam Mendes, Jim Jarmusch, Rebecca Miller, Martin Scorsese and more. She has been the three-time winner of the Award for Excellence in Dramatic Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival, for her films Personal Velocity: Three Portraits, Angela and Swoon, which was her first dramatic film after starting out in documentaries on politics.
She has been on the juries of a number of important film festivals across the globe. In 1997, she was asked to join the jury for the Sundance Film Festival. In 2013 she was part of the jury for the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2015, she served part of the Jury of the Belgrade Film Festival and the Camerimage. Always willing to share her vast experience and knowledge She has given guest lectures at a variety of film schools as well as festival panels such as SVA, NYU, BU University of Texas at Austin, Walker Art Center, Hamptons International Film Festival, Camerimage, Berlinale and Woodstock Film Festival, among other festivals.
In 1999, she was invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers, thus becoming the fifth female member to join more than 400 male peers.
In 2008, she released her directorial debut, The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), which she co-directed, co-wrote, co-produced and shot. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2009. In 2010, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Non-Fiction Filmmaking for the film.
In the year she was approached to by the producer Christine Vachon to shoot her first dramatic film (Swoon) for director Tom Kalin. The film was awarded the Sundance Award for Excellence in Cinematography in 1992. This collaboration marked the beginning of a long-running partnership together with Killer Films, which includes projects such as Postcards From America and I Shot Andy Warhol.

Kuras was born within Cedar Grove, New Jersey. After completing a double- degree in anthropology and semiotics from Brown University, she studied photography at RISD and 8mm filmmaking in New York, with the goal of becoming an documentary film maker. In the beginning of the 80s Kuras was planning to pursue a degree through an Fulbright grant to attend an academy for film located in Poland but was unable attend due to the advent the martial law. Kuras was a filmmaker when she began in 1987, when she shot Ellen Bruno’s Samsara The Samsara: and Rebirth in Cambodia, the first US film made in Cambodia following her involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1990, she received the Eastman Kodak Best Cinematography Focus Award for her work on Samsara. The film received praise from The Student Academy Awards and the Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded the Special Jury Recognition.
Over the course of her career, she has received many accolades including the Women in Film Kodak Vision Award in 1999 and was honored at the 2006 Gotham Award for her entire body of work. In 2003 she was the first film technician to receive the prestigious NY Women In Film and TV Muse Award, which traditionally is given to actresses. In 2009 she was a special Honoree at the Santa Fe Film Festival for her leadership and work in the field of cinematography.
