Elkouria Amidane is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activist who was born on September 29, 1985 in El Aaiún, Morocco. The region that comprise Western Sahara was a Spanish Colony until 1975, making it the last colonial province of Africa. There was a war between these nations along with it was the Sahrawi National Liberation Movement, known as the Polisario Front, which proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) with an exiled government located in Tindouf, Algeria. Mauritania was able to withdraw in 1979, and Morocco finally gained the de facto sovereignty of the majority parts of Sahrawia, which included all major cities and natural resources.

Amidane is determined to inform all the people of the planet about Moroccan abuse that affects people of the Saharawi people. With the help of international human rights organisations she has shared images and videos documenting Moroccan violation of human rights against the Sahrawi people, which was employed by NGOs like Amnesty International. On February 4, 2009, Elkouria Amidane received the Student Peace Prize for her advocacy for human rights and for the Saharawi people.

From the 20th of July to the 6th of August 2007, at 22-year-old the girl was on travelling across Norway and Sweden to meet with students from various universities. She narrated the battles for justice in Western Sahara. She also met Ms. Truls Wickholm, a Parliamentarian from Sweden and a number of the leaders of Labour Youth. She also met with the 200,000-strong Norwegian Student Union and the Norwegian Association of Students, which expressed their backing for the cause. The majority of the groups submitted a written letter signed by the organizations in support of the Government of Morocco to help defend students’ rights. Elkouria Amidane (born 29 September 1985) is an activist, a Sahrawi Student and Human Rights activist. Elkouria Amidane has over the many years led non- violent struggles to secure Western Sahara self-determination and demonstrated the need for Saharawi student rights against Morocco. Elkouria Amidane received the Student Peace Prize in 2009 to recognize her efforts for human rights and for the Saharawi people. Elkouria Amidane received with the Ordfront Democracy Prize in the Swedish Parliament in Sweden.

In 2005, during the eruption in the Intifada for Independence she was arrested along with her brother El Wali Amidane was arrested by the Moroccan police along with a number of human rights activists. The sentences could be as high as one year of imprisonment. It was in 2006 that El Wali Amidane was detained again and sentenced to five years in prison. Both Amidane and her family have been incarcerated and tortured for their political militantism. Many times, they have reported on the detention and abuse of family members of Amidane’s as well as the Moroccan police raids on their house.

On 21 October 2011, Elkouria Amidane was awarded the Ordfront Democracy Prize at the Swedish parliament.
