Thurnau Professor and John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan and is a specialist in the fields of ethics, political philosophy and feminist philosophy.

Anderson’s book, The Imperative of Integration, was awarded The American Philosophical Association’s Joseph B. Gittler award for “an outstanding scholarly contribution in the field of the philosophy of one or more of the social sciences.” Anderson is also the an author on Value in Ethics and Economics as well as a myriad of other essays.

Anderson is elected to be a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the year 2008. in 2013. Anderson was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship to help her work. Anderson was awarded the Progress Medal Laureate in February 2018 by the Society for Progress for her book Private Government: How Employers control our lives (and why we don’t talk about it). In the year 2019, she was awarded an award of “Genius Grant” from the MacArthur Fellows Program.

Growing up as a child in Manchester, Connecticut, Anderson graduated from Manchester High School in 1977. Her father, who was an engineer at United Technologies, got her interested in philosophy after reading John Stuart Mill and Plato together with her.

Anderson earned an B.A. with top marks in philosophy and an economics minor from Swarthmore College in 1981. In 1987, Anderson was awarded her Ph.D. in Philosophy at Harvard University. Anderson was an visiting lecturer in philosophy in Swarthmore College 1985-86 and took over a job as a professor at the University of Michigan in 1987. She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy in Philosophy and Women’s Studies 1993-1999 and was promoted to professor in 1999. In 1994 she was appointed Arthur F. Thurnau Professor to recognize her commitment to undergraduate education that had a tangible impact on the intellectual growth and the lives that her pupils. In 2005, she got the distinction of being named John Rawls Collegiate Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies and in 2013 she was named the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies.
