Kell was only 16 years old when she was chosen to race her way through the Australian youth quad scull competing in for the 2000 Junior World Rowing Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. They came in twelfth overall position the following year. Kell was selected again to compete in the Junior World Championships, this time in Duisburg, Germany in a double scull together with Hally Hames. They took their repechage, and easily qualified for the semi- finals with three-thirds of a second. The Italians who wowed them Australians at the end, putting in an impressive performance, leaving them Australians out of medal contention in the final by 0.6 second. It was the Russians and Germans made up a lead over the remaining competitors, and left Kell and Hames competing for bronze. They were third for the majority of the race, but were unable to beat the speed of the Italians until the final.

Kell was selected for state selection in consecutive New South Wales crews contesting the 2001, 2002 and women’s youth eight championship in 2003 competing for the Bicentennial Cup at the Interstate Regatta in the Australian Rowing Championships. These teams won in 2002 and 2001. In the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 Kell was a member of the New South Wales senior women’s eight team, competing in the Queen’s Cup at the Australian Championships. She also took part in the Women’s Interstate Sculling Championship (the Nell Slatter Trophy) in the year 2006.

In Sydney University colours she contested Australian national titles at the Australian Rowing Championships on a number of occasions. In 2006 and 2007 she raced in all three sculling boats – the single, the double and the quad as well as being seated at seven in New South Wales composite eights. In 2008 she competed in the quad, in a pair and in a composite Australian selection eight which won the open women’s eight national championship.
