Eliza Jane Ault Connell was born in Sydney, New South Wales on the 19th of September, 1981. In 1997 at the age 16 she was close to dying due to meningococcal infection. Her legs were removed above the knees just within two days of contracting the disease. She explained “Amputation wasn’t a decision I had to make: I was in a coma at the time. Mum and Dad were told that’s what had to be done to save my life, so in that sense there was no choice.” Then she had to take the decision to have the majority of her fingers of each hand removed. She was hospitalized for six months, and in 1998, she received prosthetic legs.
She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours “for significant service to community health, and as a Paralympic athlete.”
The first major international event for Ault-Connell was the 2002 Commonwealth Games where she won the bronze medal in the women’s Wheelchair 800m. In 2002, at the IPC Athletics World Championships, she participated in three events and earned the silver medal in the women’s 400m T54 race. The 2004 Olympic Games, she placed second in the demonstration event of the Women’s 1500 m wheelchair as well as the Women’s 800 m wheelchair. She also took part at the 2004 Summer Paralympics. The 2004 Athens Paralympics she participated in five events but failed to medal. Ault-Connell was the winner of three consecutive Oz Day 10K Wheelchair Road Race between 2004 and the year 2006. She was awarded an Olympic bronze medal in the women’s 800m T54 event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. In the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships, she participated in three events and earned the bronze medal in the women’s 800m T54 event.
