Kioumourtzoglou was the head coach of the Greek national basketball team from 1987 to 1994. He won the silver medal at the EuroBasket 1989. He also led Greece to a 6th-place finish at the 1990 FIBA World Championship, a 5th-place finish at the EuroBasket 1991, and a 4th-place finish at the EuroBasket 1993.
In 1995, he was a EuroLeague semifinalist at the Saragoza EuroLeague Final Four, where he led his team, Panathinaikos, to a 3rd-place finish. In 1996, he was a FIBA European Cup (FIBA Saporta Cup) finalist, while coaching PAOK. He was also the head coach of Panionios, Aris, and Iraklis.
