In January of 2010 the first-time campaigner Donna Mayfield announced that she was running to the Kentucky House of Representatives for the 73rd House District. At the time this district was overseen by the four-term state representative incumbent Don Pasley (D-Clark).

In 2015, Mayfield came under fire for tacking an unrelated amendment requiring fetal ultrasounds onto KY HB 177, a bill designed to assure that animals in Kentucky have adequate shelter. Kentucky has been rated the worst state for animal protection for seven years in a row, and is projected to ‘win’ this rating for year eight.

In the days leading up to the election, as the final count drew closer and the two parties were expecting the political landscape to favor candidates from the Republican candidates. However, as of Oct. 20 in the Richmond Register stated that incumbent Don Pasley as favored to get re-elected. Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo did not name Pasley as a possible candidate, despite the fact that which he believed to be among the Democrats particularly targetted by Republicans as being vulnerable. Kentucky House Minority Leader Jeff Hoover did mention his opinion that Mayfield had been “turning out to be a good campaigner.” This was a reason why it was deemed an surprise when Mayfield was elected the winner of in the primary election of November 2 2010. She was moved to the United States Marshals Service in Lexington in June of 1975. She was employed at the United States Marshals Service until retirement as the Administrator in September 2001. She was presented with the U.S. Marshals Service Director’s special Achievement Award in 1987. In 2007, she stepped out of retirement and began working in the Clark County Sheriff’s Office in Winchester, Kentucky, where she worked until she was elected Kentucky State Representative.
