Donna Gurr is one of the most popular and richest Swimmer who was born on February 18, 1955 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Donna-Marie Gurr, CM (born 18 February 1955) is a former female swimmer from Canada.

It took a long time to get the leg and knee functioning properly again after six months of casts and crutches, however two months later, Gurr took home 3 medals in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. It was quite an amazing achievement. She was awarded an award of silver at the backstroke 200m and a bronze medal in the 100-metre backstroke. She also won a bronze medal in the 4×100-metre Medley relay at Edinburgh in the Commonwealth Games of 1970 at age 15. She was named with the BC Junior Athlete of the Year award in the year 1970.

In 1971, at 16 years old, Gurr won 3 gold and one silver medal at the Pan- American Games in Cali, Colombia. The gold medals were in the Women’s 4x100M Medley Relay, and the 100 and 200M Backstroke events. The silver medal was in the 4x100M Freestyle Relay. During the final of the 200M Backstroke, at about the 75M mark, all the power in the area went out. As it was an outdoor pool, at night, this caused the race to come to an abrupt halt. Who knows what the outcome would have been had the race continued, but it was decided by the coaches and swimmers to re-swim the final after the other races that night. And Gurr did win on the second try.

During her career Gurr traveled extensively, all over Canada and the United States, competing at the Santa Clara International Meet every summer. She traveled to England numerous times, attending the Coca-Cola International Meet in London in the spring, for several years, and on other occasions as well. She traveled to Scotland, Holland, Germany twice, Switzerland, Norway, France, Austria and the former Yugoslavia. She also visited New Zealand twice, Australia once, where she met Dawn Fraser, a swimming icon, at the New South Wales Championships in January 1972. She also went to Hawaii, Fiji, and Cali, Colombia in 1971 for the Pan-Am Games.

The next time they went to at the Canadian Nationals in Montreal, where she took her first National title in the 200- and 100-metre backstroke. She came home with four gold medals and one silver. The team then went to compete in the inaugural Canada Games in Halifax where she was awarded five gold medals. In addition, she also was National Champion in the 100 and 200-metre backstrokes from 1969 to 1972.

Gurr began swimming at the newly constructed Arbutus Club in Vancouver in

  1. She later was a part of the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club, where her idol Elaine Tanner swam and was coach by Howard Firby. She was able to compete in her very first Senior Nationals at age 12 and placed 12th in an event. When she was 13, she missed out on an entry into the team for 1968’s Olympic team, placing 3rd in the 200-meter backstroke in the Olympic Trials, and missing the qualifying time only by 3 10ths of one second. In the season of 1969, at the age of 14 years old, the Canadian Dolphins took their very first visit to Europe and attended the ASA British Championships in Blackpool. She took home five gold medals in the swimming events, in both senior and junior events and the most significant of which was winning the senior 100m backstroke and 200 meters backstroke titles.

In her professional life, Gurr had many health issues and suffered a number of injuries. Following the extremely productive summer of 1969 she started to feel discomfort within her right knee. The x-rays revealed a problem. Osteochondritis dissecans in the condyle of the left side where a portion of the bone was breaking away from the femur. It was discovered by her orthopedic doctor Dr. Hector Gillespie, and her primary care physician and sports medicine specialist Dr. Doug Clement that surgery was required to fix the loose bone in the correct position. In December 1969, she went to the hospital for surgery. To her shock, as she was wheeled into the operating room she was informed that there was a change in plans. Because of her age, doctors believed that by using crutches as well as an specialized cast that went from ankle to hip the knee will heal itself by itself. The cast was constructed of hot and molded foam rubber. It was held together by fiberglass coated with Acetone, then wrapped around the foam layer. After drying it was almost weightless and she was able to continue the training. It was the first prototype for the fiberglass castings made of lightweight material widely used today by people.

Gurr began training, virtually only being able to use one leg while swimming and doing the turns at each end of the pool, and using the crutches at all times, with no weight bearing on that leg. Not missing months of training was very important at this time, as her first International Games, the Commonwealth Games, were coming up in the summer of 1970. The cast was removed twice, once to qualify for the Games trials, and then again for the Commonwealth Trials in Edmonton. She finished first at the trials, despite swimming with the use of only one leg and made the team in the 100 and 200-metre backstroke. Crutches were used at all times while walking. The cast came off for good in May 1970, and the knee was deemed healed.
