The removal of Ebbe Skovdahl of Aberdeen at the end of November in 2002, led to the hiring of accomplished Inverness Manager Steve Paterson and his assistant Duncan Shearer, leaving the Inverness post unfilled. Following a long interview procedure, Livingston coach John Robertson was appointed , and Park was made as his assistant. They managed Inverness to win the Scottish First Division title in 2004 before advancing onto the Scottish Premier League. After Craig Levein’s transfer into Leicester City, Robertson and Park were chosen to form the Hearts management team.
He resigned as Caley assistant manager in August 2007 to move back to the Central Belt. He initially took a job with Raith Rovers before being appointed as Mixu Paatelainen’s assistant at Hibernian in January 2008. Park served in this role for 18 months before being appointed as Head of Coach Education by the SFA. He was appointed coach of the Scotland under-19 team in August 2017, a position he held until May 2018.
As playing in the club Meadowbank, Park moved into coaching. He was named manager of the club in 1992. After a year, he left before he was appointed manager. He then served an insignificant time as the joint manager of Arbroath along with George Mackie in 1994, before joining Hibs as trainer in the summer of the same year. Park was an assistant coach for youth under the management of Alex Miller and Alex McLeish as well as the interim manager after Alex McLeish was transferred to Rangers at the end of 2001. After Franck Sauzee was named McLeish’s successor Park was promoted to the post as assistant manager. Sauzee was dismissed by Hibs after just 69 days as manager and Park quit Hibs at the close 2002-2001 season. Park was acknowledged for the growth of many young players, including Derek Riordan, Kenny Miller, Ian Murray, Tam McManus and Garry O’Connor.

A member of the Scottish Highland Football League, Park was educated at Lochaber High School in the Highlands of North West Scotland. Donald Park joined Highland League club Inverness Caledonian as a 16-year-old in 1969. He was a close friend of George Campbell, who became professional footballer for Aberdeen FC. When he was a kid, Park was also a shinty player. Park was recognized several times at international amateur level by Scotland while playing with both Inverness Caledonian FC and Hearts FC.
Park was made a professional player when Park signed with Heart of Midlothian in 1972. He played for six seasons with Tynecastle initially as a winger and later as central midfielder. In September 1978, he was moved from Partick Thistle, in a swap deal that involved Denis McQuade, and he played a key role in The Maryhill Magyars as they perennially struggled to avoid relegation from in the Premier Division. After the Glasgow team was degraded, Park returned to Hearts in May 1983. He finished his career with a couple of short stints in Brechin City, and Meadowbank Thistle.
Robertson and Park’s career at Hearts was brief and, despite reaching two cup semi-finals and achieving a fifth-place finish in the league, they were sacked and replaced by George Burley in 2005. Following the departure of Craig Brewster to Dundee Utd, Inverness appointed Charlie Christie to be interim manager. A number of high-profile names were linked with the vacancy including Park himself. Christie was appointed on 27 January 2006 with Park as his assistant. At the split in the 2005–06 season, Inverness narrowly missed out on a spot in the top half of the SPL.
