Cleveland started his graduate studies with Princeton University in 1972, moving to biochemistry in the middle of the year. He was a student of Marc Kirschner and graduated with his Ph.D. on the 27th of July in. The title of his doctoral dissertation was “Purification and properties of tau, a microtubule associated protein which induces assembly of microtubules from purified tubulin”. As a graduate student Cleveland was the first to identify and analysis of tau, showing that it has the characteristics of an unfolded protein natively. Tau is now known as a marker of Alzheimer’s disease and is the reason for the chronic brain injuries. He also created an peptide fingerprinting procedure which became so well-known that it was a citation- classic Cleveland worked as a postdoctoral researcher alongside William J. Rutter at the University of California at San Francisco from 1978 until 1981. Cleveland is the very first person to duplicate tubulin actin and keratin.
Cleveland was raised living in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He received an B.S. with physics degree in 1972 at New Mexico State University, and graduated as valedictorian of in the College of Arts and Sciences.
