Donald O’Riley Quarrie CD (born 25 February 1951) is a Jamaican former track and field athletewho was one of the best sprinters in the 1970s. In the 1976 Summer Olympics his name received the Olympic gold medal at the Olympic 200 meters, and the silver winner in the Olympic 100 meters. He competed at 5 Olympic Games and was awarded four Olympic medals in his career.
In 1974, Quarrie was able to repeat his feat from the year 1970 by winning the 100 and 200 m championships in the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, becoming the first athlete to hold the title in both events. The following year He again broke the world record for the 200-meter race, 19.8. He also set the record for 100 meters with a hand-timed time (9.9) during 1976 during the California Relays at Modesto Junior College He was one of the few athletes who have held both records at the same time. The time is actually 10.07 seconds.
At the 1978 Commonwealth Games he won his third consecutive 100 m title but was eliminated in the 200 m after a cramp attack. Quarrie’s participation in his fourth Olympics in Moscow was in doubt after he was involved in a car crash the previous year. He recovered in time to compete but was eliminated in the 100 m semi-finals. His title defense failed in the 200 m but he did make the final and finished third, adding a bronze medal to his collection.
By 1984 Quarrie was no longer among the world’s best in the individual sprint events and it was therefore no surprise he was eliminated in the heats of the 200 m event at the Los Angeles Olympics. However, he won a fourth Olympic medal with the Jamaican relay team, which finished second behind the United States. His final competitive race was a 200m in London in September 1984, in which he finished 3rd.
He broke the 200m World record for 1971, and set the 100m world record in the year 1976. He holds lifetime records in the range of 10.07 seconds as well as 19.86 seconds for these events.

Quarrie was part of the Jamaican 100 m team at in the 1968 Summer Olympics at the age of 17 however, he hurt himself during training and was unable to not participate. Quarrie moved in his home in the United States and attended the University of Nebraska and later the University of Southern California, where he earned the degree of Business as well as Public Administration. In 1976 after winning the AAA’s 100/200 titles Quarrie could finally compete at the Olympics without injuries. He first made the 100 m final, which he led until overtaken by Trinidadian Hasely Crawford. In the 200 m Quarrie led the pack coming out of the turn and held off all challenges to take the title in 20.22.
