Chill’em’ All was awarded An ADISQ Felix Award in 2005 for “Album of the Year” in the category of electronic/techno and received nominations for “Best Dance Recording” at the 2006 Juno Awards. The track “No Heaven” was nominated at the 2006 CASBY Awards in the category “Favourite New Song” and was awarded the SOCAN prize for Dance Music in 2007. DJ Champion’s debut indie album was able to sell more than 100,000 copies in Canada.
In 2006, Morin released The Remix Album, an album featuring remixes of tracks from “Chill’em All” by such guest musicians as Akufen and Patrick Watson. The Remix Album garnered Morin another ADISQ Félix Award for “Show of the Year” and it was also nominated for Dance Recording of the Year at the 2007 Juno Awards. Morin and Bonifassi worked together again on a version of 1957 Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit “I Put a Spell on You”; it was used as the theme song of the Québécois film Truffe which premiered at the Fantasia Festival in January 2008.
In the winter of 2008, after a long spate of touring and performing, Morin felt that his newer material was starting to sound too similar to the songs of Chill’em All and he decided to delete an entire studio recording in order to start fresh. Morin withdrew himself from the musical scene and began experimenting. He also recruited Pilou Côté, a young musician from the Montreal music scene, to provide vocals, replacing Betty Bonifassi who had since moved on to her own electronic music project, Beast.
Maxime Morin started playing guitar when he was 13 and was primarily playing heavy metal. Morin continued to join a handful of metal and punk bands at his 25th birthday,, he began to move away from metal, and gravitating toward techno. The shift was gradual “Totally, I was like ‘Dance music is crap!’ So it was actually a big liberation, to lose my fear of dance music,” Morin said Morin in an interview with the BBC in 2004. His girlfriend at the time invited him to a show in a warehouse and then he began attending Techno Sundays in Les Foufounes Electriques, a Montreal nightclub that was famous in the 80s and the 90s for the booking of pop and alternative rock artists. In 1994, Morin began to produce the music for his dance group and began performing in the Montreal nightlife scene with the names Le Max and Mad Max. Around the age of 27, Morin had stopped playing guitar completely.

In the mid 1990s, Quebecois composer Benoit Charest was a fan of an Mad Max performance; after the show, Charest met with Morin with a business idea and the two men became co-owners of Ben and Max Studios, a company that specializes in soundtracks and jingles. Ben & Max Studios became very successful, but in 2001, Morin decided to sell his stake of the business back to Charest to allow him to pursue his own musical career. Although they ended the business partnership, Morin remained in close contact with Charest who was developing the score for the 2003 animated feature, The Triplets of Belleville (Les Triplettes de Belleville). Morin was later to play the percussion and bass on the track “Belleville Rendez-vous” and he also performed the song live, with Charest and the vocalist Beatrice (Betty) Bonifassi in the 76th Academy Awards ceremony–Morin played percussion by bike during the performance. The main characters in the film, Les Triplettes de Bellville is a young cyclist who is called Champion; Morin has stated that he already performed under that title prior to the film even was created.
In 2001 Morin was frustrated by commercial music jobs. As a part-owner of Ben & Max Studios he was earning a decent living by producing music for commercials and films, but Morin was also feeling “empty.” He made the decision to leave this world and focus on more of his own music. He chose to go in the direction of music where he could mix “the two things that made him feel great: Live electronics as well as guitars. …” Also, he decided to change his title to Mad Max and change it to DJ Champion as a way to mock the increasing dance music scene, and the consequent influx of DJs “Everybody was looking to become DJs and was curious about who is most effective DJ? I said, “I don’t care about that stuff right now. “I’m DJ Champion.”
2005 saw the release of DJ Champion’s debut album, Chill’em All. The album included the hit single “No Heaven” — a soulful and bluesy song set against heavy dance beats and noisy guitar riffs. Inspired by Negro Songs of Protest recorded by music collector Lawrence Gellert, Béatrice “Betty” Bonifassi (with whom Morin had previously collaborated on the Les Triplettes de Belleville soundtrack) sings a plaintive tune reminiscent of the work songs sung by the chain-gangs of the American South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “I heard Betty singing those blues songs, and she was the girl for that job,” said Morin. The single “No Heaven” was used in both a trailer and the ending credits of Gearbox Software’s 2009 video game Borderlands, and is used in the opening credits of the television series The Line and the ending credits of the game Army of Two.
