He is the recipient of the Prize of Leningrad Mathematical Society (1984), Max Planck Research Award of the Max Planck Society, Germany (1994) as well as the Humboldt Prize of Humboldt Foundation, Germany (2002), Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Berkeley, California 1986.

Dima Grigoriev was born and raised in Leningrad, Russia and graduated from the Leningrad State University, Dept. of Mathematical Sciences and Mechanics, in 1976 (Honours Diploma). Between 1976 and 1992, he worked for LOMI, Leningrad Department of the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1979, he received a PhD (Candidate of Sciences) in Physics and Mathematics with the thesis “Multiplicative Complexity of a Family of Bilinear Forms” (from LOMI under the supervision under the direction of Anatol Slissenko). In 1985, he received a Doctor of Science (higher doctorate) with thesis “Computational Complexity in Polynomial Algebra”. From 1988 to 1992, he was the director of Laboratory of algorithmic methods Leningrad Department of the Steklov Mathematical Institute. Between 1992 and 1998, Grigoriev was a an associate professor in Penn State University.
