Munaweera was selected to play in the 3T20Is against Australia in the year 2017 in the senior category of batsmen in which many of the senior players were ruled out because of injuries. In his first game back on February 17, Munaweera scored 29-ball 44 runs, which provided a rapid beginning to chase. Sri Lanka finally won the match by five wickets. In August of 2017 He was included in the Sri Lankan One Day International (ODI) team ahead of the fourth game against India. The first ODI match he played in was on the 31st of August, 2017 in a match against India. He scored just 11 runs. Sri Lanka lost the match by 168 runs.
In April 2018, he was named in Colombo’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament.
