Dieter Eilts (born 13 December 1964) is an German ex-professional footballer, who was an attacking midfielder. He was known as the Alemao from East Frisia, due to his similarity with Brazilian midfielder Alemao. The term Alemao refers to “German” in Portuguese (but in reality, the Brazilian player was nicknamed due to his blond “German” appearance). After his retirement as a footballer in the mid-2000s, he began a management career. He also worked at SV Werder Bremen as director of the academy for football.

As of 2009 Eilts has been appointed the youth manager of VfL Oldenburg. In January of 2011 Eilts was promoted to his new job as the youth coordinator at the club.

Following his playing time, Eilts trained the German U19 team. From 6 August 2004 onwards, as the manager for the German U21 team. In the following years, he was a coach for German second-league club Hansa Rostock, but was dismissed by the club on March 6, 2009 following poor league performances.

Eilts also played regularly for the German squad, earning 31 caps. His best performances came during his 1996 European Championship, when he, Matthias Sammer and Thomas Helmer were the backbone of defense of the squad that took home the title.

Eilts was a participant in EURO 1996 with the reputation of being an exceptional team player for Werder Bremen under future competition idol Otto Rehhagel, but at international level, he was unexperienced and had never played in a major event. There was some doubts among the German media regarding the rationale behind giving Eilts the role of midfield anchorman in England however the shrewd East Frisian surprised everybody with the poise and class of his performance. It was his tactical understanding and ability to shift back into defensive positions that allowed the sweeper Matthias Sammer to make many dangerous runs into the territory of enemy players while his team conceded only three goals. One of which was scored in the final match after Eilts had been ejected because of injury. The German international ended his professional career with 31 caps in 1997, with six of them from England and captained Bremen up to 2002 making 390 Bundesliga appearances in 17 years. He was awarded two German championships as well as three German Cups and, in 1992 the UEFA European cup Winners Cup. Since his retirement, he has coached the Germany U21 and U19 teams.
