Diego Cagna, who was captain of the team along alongside Independiente, Boca Juniors and Villarreal and then became a reserve player in the back of Boca Juniors’ promising youngsters who retired in 2005. In total, Cagna played in a total of 255 matches for Boca with 21 goals.
Cagna then guided Tigre to qualification to an international club competition for the first time in their history at the end of the 2008–09 season. Tigre appeared in the 2009 Copa Sudamericana, where they were eliminated in the first round by San Lorenzo.
In the Apertura 2008 championship Tigre finished joint top of the Primera División with Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo. Tigre had the best head-to-head record, San Lorenzo the best goal difference but Boca Juniors won the 3 way championship playoff on goal difference after the three teams once again finished level on points.
As part of the Argentina national football team , he was the winner of the Confederations Cup 1992, and took part in the Copa America 1999. His sole goal for Argentina’s national team was scored on the 15th of April, 1998 in a match between Argentina and Israel in Jerusalem the match which Argentina was defeated 1-1.

The first time he played in a professional first division match took place in December 1988, playing for Argentinos Juniors. He was transferred to Independiente in the middle of 1992, and played for four years.
Cagna was then able to be a part of Boca Juniors from the Apertura 1996 to the end of 1999. He was 29 years old and having completed Apertura 1999, he joined Boca Juniors. Apertura 1999 campaign, the player made the move towards Spanish Villarreal CF. He played two seasons for the Yellow Submarine, and after playing in the Apertura 2002 alongside Mexican Atletico Celaya, he returned to Boca Juniors in 2003.
In December 2006, he became Tigre’s manager, taking the club to the first division in only one season. Tigre’s first year in the major division was successful with Tigre finishing in 2nd place in the Apertura 2007 championship. This was Tigre’s highest ever finish in the top division, gaining Cagna notoriety from fans and the sports press.
